    This is why you need to have politics that match the philosophy of open source software. Getting capitalisms dirty fingers into an operating system is just going to lead to the project suffering and recreating the mistakes of Windows and Apple. If you're a Linux user and believe in capitalism, your politics and philosophy are incompatible and hypocritical.

    Great video and information! Thank you so much. I, indeed, have a specific request for more information and a video, if that's ok! I'm an entry-level IT at a Shipping store located in New Orleans. I've only been employed there for about a month and the tech situation is absolutely bonkers. I won't go into too many details. I do want to ask if you have any experience transitioning a business from Windows to Linux? I'm painfully aware of the hyper limitations of Windows and want to transition this business from Windows to Linux in about a year from now. My main problem to overcome, at least I think, and hopefully you can help here: Software. Our primary business software is Postalmates and Cashmate. These programs are designed only for use in Windows OS, as far as I understand. What should I do? I've been tinkering around the shop since the power outage and everything crashed. I've been able to troubleshoot some technical errors. Note: I've been working there less than a month and I'm not even certified in IT yet. I'm taking online courses and have experience but not commercial. I'm asking for technical support I'll need in a year but the fact is, I need other types of advanced IT support over there, asap. This lightning fried our network and I think our hardware as well. We've been having computer, fax, hardware, software, printing AND phone problems since the crash about 10 days ago. Do you have any experience there? Complete network crashes/ shutdowns/ lightning frying equipment/ etc? I'm basically an entry-level IT who just walked into a hyper-level tech-shit-storm lol. I'm going to keep my head down until they ask for more help. Until then, I'm doing research on how to fix this place. It's my job. We have an IT guy but he's never around. It's a precarious situation. Regarding the high-level tech cluster-hooha I'm thinking about replacing every ether cable there, to start. With the high level of voltage that shot through the network it's possible some of our internet cables were fried, is that right? The main switch board may need to be replaced which would be even more expensive. I'm wondering if I can re-do this whole network through wifi routers instead of all these messy cables everywhere? every system is running Windows 10 except one on Windows 11. If they're worried about internet speed- my own network is 5 G, running at over 500/ Mbps- running on wifi. What do you think? Any thoughts are appreciated! Can phone lines get fried by lightning? Should phones be replaced after a lightning storm? Can Linux run Postalmates or Cashmate? I've tried using Bottles on Ubuntu for Windows programs but was unsuccessful. I wasn't as knowledgeable then as I am now, but I'm also concerned Bottles can't run hardcore programs like these which are operating system-dependent and heavily internet-based. UPS and FedEX are corporate, their software is rigid and I'm unsure if I'll be able to take off those corporate training wheels and launch my job into enterprise-level Linux. My goals are to fix the network, 1- asap. And 2, transition the business out of google and windows and into Linux and Vivaldi in about a year. Whew. That's a lot. Anyway, thanks for your time, knowledge, expertise. GO LINUX! :)

    I actually like the fact that there is a company behind, that should improve security and functionality because there is a dedicated, paid, work force that is responsible for it, as is their duty. I don't like Ubuntu mainly because that whole Amazon situation a few years ago, I don't trust them anymore, the reason I'm into GNU/Linux is because I value my privacy, maybe I don't have anything important to hide but I don't like being used and manipulated to make a profit and specially I absolutely hate advertising. I would actually like to paid for a distro that I'm sure is focus on providing me constant security and not using my data to profile me. Also their colour scheme is quite ugly to me, that orange and purple combination I found to be unpleasant, now I believe is just the orange but still...

    A word of explanation here, for people new to the Linux world. A few Distributions are originals. They're parents. They use the Linux kernel and the basics of the Linux tool-chain, but then they go their own way and develop everything themselves. Debian is a parent distro. So is Redhat / Fedora. So is Open SUSE. I guess Arch is another parent distro. Suppose I want a car. So I go and look at a Toyota Corrolla. But there's a company I just found who will sell me an improved Corrolla, better engine, improved suspension... Then there's another company, who will take that 'improved' Toyota and paint it a different colour, change the seats and the carpet and the tyres, and sell that as a new car. It's still sort of a Toyota at heart, but a much better one. Now let's say something happened to the company that makes the slightly modified one. What would happen to the company that takes that and makes further changes? They have 3 choices. Start modifying a different car, go out of business, or go direct to Toyota and start their work with an original complete Corrolla. Debian is a parent. Ubuntu takes Debian and makes some changes, then they distribute that. Mint takes what Ubuntu has already changed and spruced up, and they make some further improvements. That's what Mint is. So what would happen to Mint if Ubuntu (or the company who owns it, Canonical) went out of business? Or (let's say) they started making Ubuntu a paid-for distro, non free? Or did something Mint found completely unacceptable, like Microsoft's screenshot thing in Windows? The obvious thing to do, would be start with Debian, that Ubuntu hasn't even touched, and see if we can make a fully working Mint from that. That's what Mint Debian Edition is. Clem and lads & ladies at Mint have taken the current Debian and simply cut Ubuntu / Canonical completely out of the process. Is that better? [Roll eyes] Well it does mean some of the things we're used to, in Ubuntu based Mint, are not there. Yes, but can we still make a workable distro to put out, without any of the Ubuntu stuff? I think we should find out. Let's call it Linux Mint Debian Edition and quietly distribute it alongside our full Ubuntu based version, and see how that goes. At least this way, if Ubuntu / Canonical ever disappears or changes beyond recognition, we can quickly bring a Debian based version out to keep Mint going. It's kinda like a life-boat. The Debian edition is a little less polished and has slightly fewer toys and many hours of developer work missing. Things like the Linux Mint Driver Manager, are not there in the Debian Edition. It is perfectly useable, but it's not quite as user-friendly as the normal Mint. I personally use Mint + Mate, not the Debian Edition. I have been a very happy Mint + Mate user since about 2009 when they rolled Mate out for a beta-test. It turned out to be precisely what I was looking for, and I've been very happy with it ever since.

    According to Mx Linux, they moved from Debian 11 to 12 so there is no upgrade path. I have used it for years and there were paths in Deb 10 and I am up to v19, but it is end-of-life so I have to do a clean install. As long as they are in Deb 12, there will likely be upgrade paths.

    I don’t understand all the comments of people saying how great it is 🤯 Linux is awful in general. I installed this Debian twice, because the first time it didn’t work properly, and then after reinstalling, it worked in general, but the moment I started putting software on it, it begun crashing. I gave up literally tonight after I installed Nvidia graphics drivers FOUR TIMES and it broke the machine in a different way each time. I’m honestly getting so fed up with this. Windows is literally the Devil, yet there’s no genuine alternative that just works. Why doesn’t someone create a genuinely bloat free, easily-customisable operating system that just works. The literal millions of nerds out there that live and breath this stuff, and every single last one of the forty seven billion Linux distributions is still completely and utterly useless for the average person. So annoyed

    I disagree with the distro take. Because unlike Windows and Mac, Linux has the ability to "put on some tuxedos" (get it?). DE (desktop environments) are suits. You can dress your penguin as you like. And that is what you learn about Linux after a while. You can do anything and everything, if you're set to do it. You also learn that every distro you try is a dumb distant cousin or a twin sibling, and they are all children or grandchildren of Debian, Arch or Fedora maybe (minus independent distros). So at that point, this means you can have 1 upstream distro (any of the 3) and put anything you want on it, for the most part. The distro part is GOOD in the sense that if you need an audio production machine, and you personally (like me) don't know code or how to do/write stuff, you couldn't properly install pipewire instead of pulse by yourself, for example (Like CTT did to solve DaVinci Resolve's issues). But overall you don't need so many "variants". In fact, that is how we have the market of phones and pc parts today and it's crazy.

    • @mchenrynick
      @mchenrynick 3 дня назад

      Even within a Linux distro, there are variants. For example, Linux Mint has Cinnamon, Xfce, and MATE. So let's say you prefer Gnome, you'd go with MATE.
